Why the Spine Is Important
The spine is our body’s foundation: when the spine is properly aligned, our body is healthy. When the spine is out of alignment, our body is at increased risk for pain, fatigue, injury and illness. This is why spinal care is critical for all patients. Whether you are suffering from chronic back pain or general poor health, restoring proper alignment to the spine enhances all aspects of your well-being.
In order to understand why spinal care is so critical for whole body health, it is important to understand how the spine affects the body’s functions. Next to the spine’s vertebrae and discs is the spinal cord, a bundle of nerves that carries messages from the brain throughout the body. When the spine is aligned, communication flows easily through the central nervous system: the body is in a “state of ease.” A spinal misalignment negatively impacts this state of ease and may lead to back pain. A misaligned spine may pinch or compress the nerves. This affects the central nervous system’s ability to send and receive messages. Over time, organ function deteriorates, creating a state of “dis-ease” within the body.
A herniated disc is one of the most common mechanical causes for back pain. An accident injury, such as a car accident, sports injury, or even an accidental slip and fall can knock the spine out of alignment. While medication does provide acute pain relief, drugs cannot correct the spine’s mechanical misalignment. As long as the herniated disc continues to compress nearby nerves, you will continue to experience pain.
Many of our patients are surprised to learn that chronic back pain is only one sign of poor spinal health. It can be easy to ignore or dismiss symptoms like chronic fatigue and low-grade illnesses. More sleep and less stress, however, is not always the solution. As long as spinal misalignments persist, your body’s basic functions will continue to be affected. In addition to chronic pain and fatigue, spinal misalignments are also associated with increased low-grade illnesses and allergies.
Chiropractic care is a non-invasive, drug-free technique for restoring proper alignment back to the spine. Chiropractic adjustments relieve spinal compression by gently tractioning the spine. This spinal treatment creates space for a herniated disc to return to its proper position within the spine, alleviating pain. The central nervous system can then freely send and receive messages for optimal body function. After just a few adjustments, our patients report having more energy, sleeping better at night, and experiencing fewer illnesses and allergies. This is why spinal care is so important for not only relieving pain, but also enhancing all aspects of whole body health.
Proper spinal alignment reduces the risk for chronic pain and supports a stronger immune system. Whether you suffer from chronic back pain or simply do not “feel like yourself” chiropractic care can make a difference for your health.
